Sewage Soaked and Pete

Posted in Abandoned, Fashion, Life, Modeling, Outdoor Photography, WilliamHackerPhotography, missouri, photo by williamhackerphotography on February 3, 2010

Today I went on yet another abandoned house hunt with my two friends Tyler King and Chelsea Weller. We found this awesome abandoned house in a town that for the life of me I can’t remember right now but it was a large, old farm house, jam packed full of stuff. Unfortunately in our scavenging, I fell up to my knees in sewage water located under the house and for the rest of the afternoon I endured sewage-soaked shoes and jeans. I haven’t been posting many images of the abandoned houses because I’m waiting for my series to be complete which shouldn’t be much longer. After our search through the house, we walked through the old town and my friend Chelsea posed for a few images as well as our friendly boxer companion who we decided to call Pete. All in all another great day in photography! Thanks for looking.

Morning Apples

Woke up at 5 am the other morning with my friend Tyler King in order to photograph the fog. I guess one of the perks of being a college student is not having to wake up at 5 am in the morning, although it would have been helpful to know what time sunrise was because we ended up driving around for about two hours in the dark, Thanks for looking.

The following are from a shoot I did with my friend Ellen Purvis, she has never done any modeling before and I thought she did a wonderful job for her first time. I mostly used one light  practically directly above the subject and occasionally a hair light from the back. Thanks for looking!

Experimenting with the BEES!!!!

Posted in Life, WilliamHackerPhotography, editorial, missouri, photo by williamhackerphotography on January 11, 2010

With school starting back up on monday and a bad case of the flu, I have been cooped up in my apt with nothing to do besides experiment with my new flashes. If any of you photographers are looking for a great book to read, I suggest Joe Mcnally’s book “Hot Shoe Diaries”. It’s a extremely informative collection of useful lighting techniques explained through witty humor, interesting stories, along with step by step procedures of effective lighting. Once started, anyone will have a hard time putting it down. Light is what makes a photograph and in order to be a successful photographer, we need to learn how to control, shape, bend, twist, flatten, brighten, soften, harden, wrestle and with this know-how, direct in a way that makes our photos interesting or at least bearable to look at!

If your saying to yourself “I don’t like how artificial light looks!! Natural light is so much softer and beautiful” well your perfectly right, that is if its 20 minutes before the sun goes down or comes up, with the perfect sky, color, and perfect location to glue it all together. This however is hardly ever going to be the case and in reality, just an excuse photographers tell themselves in order to feel better about not knowing the wonderful world of flash. That being said, get off the couch because its 1pm in the afternoon and the sunlight is so harsh and ugly it blinds you to look outside and experiment with artificial light.

Fashion in Augusta

©WilliamHackerPhotographyI packed up my equipment today and traveled to Augusta for our photo shoot. The temperature was about 30 degrees, which made the two and a half hour shoot a bit uncomfortable but we all managed to survive. I collaborated with my friend and photographer Tyler King and the models included Nic Balducci and Brittany Whited, both leaving Missouri in January and pursuing their modeling career in California. Tyler and I were also excited at the opportunity of having a hair and make-up assistant , LeeAnn Deschenes, as well as a stylist, Katherine Hacker. As far as equipment goes, we used two B-400’s, one umbrella and a Honda Generator to power it all!! I am in desperate need of a Vagabond but we’ll get by with what we have.
